The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) is pleased to announce the disbursement of BZ,000.00 to four grantee partners participating in the Green Wave. The Green Wave is a global campaign that enables children and youths to make a difference – one school, one tree, one step at a time. The Green Wave brings together children and youths from around the world to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity, and the need to reduce its loss. The Green Wave contributes to the planet for the Planet Billion Tree Campaign.

All Green Wave activities will lead up to the International Day for Biological Diversity which will be celebrated on May 22, 2009. On this day, students in Belize and around the world will plant a locally important native tree species, thereby creating a figurative “Green Wave” starting in the Far East and travelling West around the globe. Students will track the ‘Green Wave’ which will serve as the catalyst for greater awareness and appreciation for the importance of conserving trees and forests in order to protect global biodiversity.

Ms. Kristine Blokhus, Assistant Resident Representative for United Nations Development

Programme, will present the first disbursement cheque to each Green Wave grantee partner at the disbursement ceremony to be held at the Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute.

The four grantee partners are Sustainable Harvest International – Belize, Friends for Conservation and Development, Programme for Belize and Belize Audubon Society.

The recipients of grants are Sustainable Harvest International – Belize, Friends for Conservation and Development, Programme for Belize, and Belize Audubon Society, each receiving $12,500.
