Francis Hauze and Edgar Martinez, both Belizean volleyball players, have been gifted scholarships to pursue their studies in the United States of America. The young athletes were scouted out in Mexico in 2019 when they competed in a regional match and now, less than two years later, they are reaping the fruits of their labour. Both young men have been playing volleyball since high school and have gone on to represent Belize numerous times abroad. Now, not only will they continue to play the sport but will be pursuing Bachelor’s degrees in graphic design at Calumet College of Saint Joseph in Whiting, Indiana.
A virtual signing of their scholarship agreements was held on Tuesday, March 23 by their recruitment college. Aside from playing well and achieving good marks in school, Hauze and Martinez also fit the Catholic school’s ethical code as exemplary young men. Sean McMorrow, Volleyball Coach at Calumet College of St. Joseph, explains that because Hauze and Martinez have shown their capabilities to decipher right from wrong, recruiting the young men was an easy decision.
Hauze and Martinez now go on to join other Belizean athletes, including volleyball players, who have been recruited from international colleges for their proficiency and excellence. This goes to show that sports is making a stride in Belize and can benefit our country in countless ways.
