Twenty-six Belizean students have been awarded scholarships for studies in Taiwan under the Belize-Taiwan Cooperation Program. Twenty students have been awarded scholarships through the ICDF-Taiwan (International Cooperation and Development Fund) Scholarship Program whereby twelve students will pursue a two-year Master’s Degree and eight students will pursue a four-year Bachelor’s Degree. Six Belizeans will also be allowed to attend any university of their choice in Taiwan to pursue their undergraduate or graduate degrees through the Taiwan Scholarship Program 2010. As well, they are offered the opportunity to take a Mandarin Language Enrichment Program for one extra year to improve their language abilities.

The Taiwan Scholarship Recipients were selected in collaboration with the Ministry of Education in Belize. The accepted students come from all over the country of Belize from various schools in the different districts. The 26 scholarships granted are provided by the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and all students are scheduled to depart Belize in late August, 2010 to Taiwan to begin their studies.

On Saturday, August 7, 2010 the Belize-Taiwan ICDF Alumni Society in Belize hosted an Orientation meeting for the 26 scholarship recipients at the Chateau Caribbean Hotel in Belize City, where past and current students gave a presentation on the experience of studying in Taiwan. Advisors from the Government of Belize on the Taiwan Scholarship Selection Committee, Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Education and Youth of Belize and Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, also attended the Orientation Meeting.

The Embassy is pleased to acknowledge that 24 students completed their studies this year and graduated from their respective universities in Taiwan and returned to Belize. This is the largest group of students to graduate from Taiwan. There are currently 80 Belizeans students still studying in Taiwan.
