The post mortem examination conducted on Williams has since determined that he died as a result of thermal injuries as well as smoke inhalation. Police investigations into this matter, however, continues as officials work to determine the cause of the fire. It was rumored that Williams might have intentionally set the fire to commit suicide but neither the police nor the Fire Department can rule out any other possibilities. Due to the extent of the damages caused by the fire, it is proving difficult to determine the cause.
Stann Creek Police responded to the fire incident at around 9:15 p.m. in Pomona Village, Stann Creek where they discovered the burnt remains of a human body. It was later identified as that of Vernon Williams and was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital. There, he was pronounced dead.
