Last week Friday morning the Pedestrian Crossing of the Belize City Swing Bridge that was under repair for over five months was finally opened and work started on the other pedestrian crossing. Luckily for us it appears that for now, the scope of work on the other side will be limited to just new paint and a little welding on old iron. However, Bill Lindo who the Mayor referred to as an Engineer, has indicated that next year, like the TERMINATOR he will be back. To our despair, but it would be no surprise if indeed it is the same BUNGLING BILL LINDO, who will be doing those repairs at that time.
Apparently our colleague Jules Vasquez got wind that Bill had opened the one he was working on for what appeared to have been an eternity and had now switched over to the other Pedestrian Crossing. Being the investigative journalist he is, Jules went out to the Swing Bridge or to what some persons have referred to as Bill’s Bridge. Jules was in vintage form and asked Bill some pertinent questions in relation to the works that took place before and the works presently taking place. He asked to find out what we could suffer through for the next five, six or seven months or maybe even a year, depending on which of Bill’s personalities gets out of bed on any given day.
At the start of the interview we didn’t know which of Bill’s egos would be answering the questions, but we certainly knew that whichever one showed up on Friday, would not be able to startle Jules with brilliance, but would instead try to baffle Jules with BULL$#@£. Bill certainly did not disappoint. He started off by first rolling Mayor Wagner, declaring that he, Bill Lindo, was not and ENGINEER and that he had gone to school, but had not finished. Next he declared that there are NO CERTIFIED ENGINEERS IN BELIZE. He then declared that engineering was a trial and error thing. The most outrageous declaration he made was when he quaintly equated his repairing of the Swing Bridge, the time it has taken him and the inconvenience it has caused, to putting A MAN ON THE MOON.
Bill went on to say that he could build the new Haulover Bridge for 12 Million dollars. He then declared that he had built Belama Phase 4. That statement refreshed our memory about the 4.5 Million Dollar contract his company was given in 2006 to fill Belama Phase 4 and the mess he created. It has been causing that area to now flood with the slightest rain. All that we got for that 4.5 Million Dollars is a few lots being filled and most of the dredged material from the sea ended in the Haulover Creek and eventually right at the Swing Bridge or at the scene of the crime as some people may prefer to refer to it.
