Residents of Corozal Town are trying to figure out why one of their community’s young men was gunned down last weekend. 20-year-old Shaquille Philips was shot and killed while he was socializing on the verandah of his family home.
Police say that at around 12:30 a.m. on Monday, December 2nd, 2019, they responded to reports of shots being fired in the Alta Mira Area of Corozal. When they arrived, they were informed that Shaquille Philips was rushed to the Corozal Poly Clinic. Unfortunately, he passed away shortly afterward.
What investigators have been able to establish so far is that at around midnight, Shaquille was socializing with his father, Allison Philips on the verandah of their Alta Mira home. Allison Philips went inside and left his son sitting on the sofa outside, and shortly afterward, Shaquille’s parents heard the sound of about 8 gunshots. When they went outside to check on Shaquille, they found him suffering from multiple gunshot injuries to the body. They tried to rush him to get medical help, but by that time, it was already too late for him.
The cops immediately processed the scene for whatever evidence they could recover, and they began speaking with the neighbors. They couldn’t get any useful information that could aid them in finding Shaquille’s killer.
Shaquille’s father has spoken with the press, and he described that distressing moment when he heard the gunshots ring out. His dad said that he went to his bed, and the sound of the gunfire happening outside his house made him go check on Shaquille. By that time, Shaquille was already dead. Like any other worried parent, Shaquille’s father rushed over to lend aid, and he shook his lifeless body in an attempt to revive him. But, he was unresponsive.
His father asserts that he works from home, and avoids socializing outside. To the best of his family’s knowledge, he had no known enemies.
