The Marin family in Caye Caulker are currently grappling with a terrible tragedy from within. 17-year-old Issac Marin was stabbed to death, and the man who police are investigating for the crime is a relative.
The incident happened sometime after 11 p.m. on Monday, October 21, at Issac Marin’s family home, which is located on Avenida Langosta in the island village. There are two conflicting accounts of how this incident played out. Police have not released official details on this incident as yet, and so it is unclear as to which of the two versions is the accurate one.
One account is that Issac Marin was asleep in his bed when another family member, who is reportedly mentally ill, attacked and stabbed him to the chest. Villagers say that Issac’s older brother, 25-year-old Carlos Marin, walked into the room, saw his relative attacking his brother, and tried to stop it. That reportedly caused the knife-wielding relative to retaliate, and Carlos was also injured.
The second account is that Carlos Marin woke up to get a drink of water when he was cornered by the relative who was already armed. That relative then stabbed him, and the commotion woke Issac, who came out to investigate. That’s allegedly when this relative stabbed him in the chest.
Whatever the sequence of events, both of the Marin brothers were rushed to the island’s medical facility. Unfortunately, Issac’s injury to the chest claimed his life shortly after that. Carlos Marin was then transported via boat to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he continues to receive treatment.
At this time, it is unclear why this relative, who took up lodging with the Marin family several months ago, became so violent. The press understands that police intend to charge him criminally for what is essentially murder and attempted murder, but a psychiatric evaluation of his mental health is expected to be done.
