Students from Saint Ignatius High School in Santa Elena Town in Cayo are now benefiting from art classes taken from all historical perspective. Art Historian Javier Avella gave us a tour of his specialized art room at Saint Ignatius High School on Monday, which revealed that students have been engaged in some detailed art work.

Scattered across a room at the far end of Saint Ignatius are the drawings of Belize. For these, drawing students are given 20 minutes to come up with art work that have astounding details and shows marvelous talent.

It is now the job of Javier Avella to magnify these talents as he believes that Belize has some great artists we just “…need to start putting them in the history books.”

For the art course itself, Avella highlights the work of Mona Lisa and the importance of copyright in the engagement of art.

“One of advantages of having art in the school curriculum is that art is an investment in the Community, art has been around since the beginning of time, I am proud to be able to teach art from a historical point of view,” says Javier Avella, who is delighted that Saint Ignatius has given him an opportunity to express his talent.
