Fire officials report that an explosion that took place in Belize City at the corner of Mopan and Mahogany street was as a result of a butane leak. At around 4:40 on Tuesday evening there was a loud bang at the lower flat of a two storey house at the corner. Shortly thereafter fire blazed from the building and plumes of black smoke bellowed into the evening sky.

Neighbors say that shortly after the explosion, 21 year old Grayson Cadle ran out of one of the apartments in the building. His hair was on fire and he had severe burns all over his body. He remains hospitalized being treated for his injuries. Two other persons were also treated and have since been released from the hospital.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, fire officials say that the explosion was as a result of butane igniting in one of the rooms that were filled by a leaking gas tank. The fuel filled the room and it was only a matter of time before a spark ignited it completely destroying the interior of the house. Compounding the explosion which was the fire which gutted the entire contents of the building.
