Our subject this week is Heavenly Treasure. In the Gospel of Matthew chapter 6, verses 20 and 21, Jesus advises, “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

To treasure something means to be devoted to it and give all our attention to keep it. There was a rich woman whose house was burgled. The thieves stole all her jewellery, money, and all they considered to be valuable. However they left all her books. When she got back, she checked her books and finding them all intact she rejoiced. Someone will think she was crazy, but her reasoning was that it is what she studied in these books which empowered her to attain all these things, so she knew she could start afresh. The thieves stole her resources but they couldn’t steal her source.

As believers our source is God, our Lord and Father. He is the reason that we are who we are, and have become what He made us to be. And we must give all our attention and devotion to Him above everyone and everything else in our life. The Bible teaches that when we give for the work of God on earth, we store up treasure in heaven. The purpose of a storehouse is to keep money and resources for future use.

It is very important for us to recognize that it is our storehouse in heaven which is our source. This will make us not relent in filling it up. That means even when we lose all our physical resources, we can trust our heavenly source. Just as the woman in the story recognized that her outward treasures were not her source.

Remember, use your earthly treasure to provide for the work of God on earth. Then you will store up treasure in Heaven!
