A 12-year-old girl visiting Belize City over the weekend had a life altering and traumatizing experience after she was brutally raped and sodomized by a man.
According to the 12-year-old girl who is from the southern part of the country, at around midnight on Friday May 1 she was travelling inside a vehicle to go home after a family gathering. She says that at the time she along with two of her relatives; a young man and a young woman along with another individual were on King Street heading into Tigris Street when the driver of the vehicle lost control and ran into a drain and fence. In the commotion the child was approached by a man whom she described as a dark complexioned man wearing a short dread hairstyle and a black t-shirt.
The 12-year-old told police that the man grabbed her, covered her mouth and placed her on the bar of his bicycle and rode off from the accident scene. The girl was taken to a house believed to be #112 Tambran Street in the Jane Usher Boulevard area where the man forced her to take a pill and thereafter raped and sodomized her. When the girl woke from the ordeal she found herself badly bruised with a large burn-like mark on her back and suffering from other injuries to her shoulders and face. She managed to escape the man who was sleeping beside her. With the assistance of a man whom she found in the area, the police were called in and they visited the house where they found the culprit still asleep.
Police arrested him and have since identified him as 39-year-old Vanzie Jervis Lamb. On Monday May 4, he was taken before Magistrate Sharon Frazer where he was charged with rape and committing an unnatural crime. The prosecutor objected to bail and the Magistrate agreed and remanded him to custody until June 19
