Belize Electricity Limited is announcing that as of Friday May 8, the Mexican power provider Comision Federal de Electricidad will be cutting power to Belize.

The cut off will last for four months and the reason is that the power provider has seen damage to its generating equipment in Campeche which is not allowing the company to provide power to the Yucatan Peninsula. With the cutting of Belize from the Mexican supplier, BEL will have to resort to local power production to supply the 43 Megawatts of power which it purchases from Mexico.

The country’s peak demand for power stands at 74 megawatts and BEL will now have to rely on its diesel generators as well as mobile units and the gas turbine located at mile 8 on the Western Highway for supply which is produced by BEL. An additional 15 megawatts are sourced from Belize Aquaculture Limited (BAL).

With BEL now having to compensate for the 43 megawatt shortage, it can only be expected that there will be alternating blackouts.
