On Wednesday, July 8, 2009, businessman Jay Crofton, owner of Crystal Auto Rentals showed his appreciation to the Ladyville Police Department for “their dedication to fighting crime”.
Crofton is grateful because on June 8 two of his 2008 vehicles were stolen from the Phillip Goldston International Airport parking lot. One was a black 4-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and the other was a blue 4-door 2008 Dodge Ram. The theft was reported to police and officers at the station told him that they will do everything they can to find the vehicle, but it would be difficult because their vehicle was down. Transportation was then provided by Crystal Auto Rentals.
An employee of Crystal Auto Rentals then drove the officers around as they did their investigation. The 2008 Jeep was recovered on June 13 and the Dodge Ram was recovered on June 14. Within a week the officers solved the case with the help of Crystal Auto Rentals.
Crofton said that he was devastated when he found out his vehicle was stolen: “It was tough. The total value of the vehicles was $160,000. I had already counted my loss, but the fine work of the police officers brought me back my vehicles.” He said that he was so grateful he asked the officer in charge if there was anything he could do to assist them. “They told me transportation was a major issue so I said, ‘Hey, why don’t I give you a vehicle’.”
Crystal Auto Rental donated a 2002 Economy 4×4 SUV to the Ladyville Police Department. Assistant Commissioner of Police David Henderson was present for the brief ceremony. He said, “The Police Department is grateful for this donation. The best way to fight crime is by working together. To solve the crime of the stolen vehicles, the police and the workers of Crystal worked together and that is what it is all about.”
Crofton began renting and selling vehicles in Belize in 1989. He started with ten (10) vehicles and today his business has grown to operating over two hundred (200) vehicles. He said, “I hope that I am just the start. Everyone in the business community should try and support the needs of the Police Department. A carpenter needs hammers and saws; likewise, police officers need vehicles.”
PC Anthony Martinez was given the keys to the vehicle. He said, “A contribution like this just motivates you to go out everyday and do your job to the best of your ability.”
