The official inauguration of the Placencia Municipal Airport took place on Friday, December 4, 2020 after a period of rehabilitation under the previous UDP administration. Following this rehabilitation, the airport was ready for the resumption of flights since December 1. At the inauguration, Minister of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation Andre Perez commented that Placencia, being a nucleus of tourism and economic development, will greatly be benefitted by the rehabilitation of the municipal airport. “As an up and coming tourism hub in the Jewel, we look forward to increasing the carrying capacity to increase the traveler experience by providing a safe and modern airport for our Placencia residents and Southern Belize, who frankly deserve this kind of infrastructure.”
The new Placencia Municipal Airport now enjoys a 2,775 feet by 40 feet, asphalt with hot mix runway with average load bearing shoulders which are 10 feet wide on either side. It also features essential thermoplastic markings and a modern lighting system in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards; proper drainage; additional security fencing; and shore protection system. The modern lighting system installed is comprised of runway edge, displaced threshold, threshold/end, and taxiway lights. These will help to facilitate late and emergency Medivac flights to and from the Peninsula.
