Coming out of the United Democratic Party’s National Party Council on Saturday was a decision to hold a convention to elect a Standard Bearer for the Caribbean Shores Constituency. The Secretariat advises that the application deadline is set for May 31, 2019. The convention itself is scheduled for Sunday June 30, 2019 at Trinity Methodist School.
With just about six weeks to the convention, the aspiring candidates have already hit the campaign trail, from as early as Saturday evening, teams from the various camps were on the ground sizing up the situation. So far two people have expressed interest in contesting the convention. Those persons are Lee Mark Chang and Leila Peyrefitte. Santiago “Santi” Castillo had indicated he was running but announced on Wednesday that he was not vying for standard bearer after all. At this juncture we are unaware if any other person will join the race besides the three aforementioned persons.
It is expected that whomever emerges as the Standard Bearer at the end of the convention, will go on to become the next Area Representative whenever the next General Election are held. Caribbean Shores is a peculiar constituency, because although some folks may see it as a mostly affluent one with persons who hold with high paying jobs, there are also a few pockets of poverty stricken areas in the constituency too. Politicians in the area, must strike a balance between the two different economic statuses. They must satisfy the needs of both strata of the constituency. With the caliber of candidates who have entered the race so far and the possibility of other persons entering the race, the next six weeks should surely bring a lot of excitement to Caribbean Shores.
