A 6-year-old boy drowned over the Easter weekend, and another child, a 9-year-old girl, is clinging to life at the KHMH after she almost died while swimming.
The drowning victim is 6 year-old Zaem Torres, a student of Water Lane Street in San Pedro. His uncle tells the press that on the night of Holy Thursday, April 13, 2017, his family went to a restaurant near their home. They had a rather busy day at the water company that they own right at their home, and so they took him with them. He was allowed to play with other children, since it is an area that is protected from traffic. His parents were keeping an eye on him because he would, as children do, run back and forth and ask for food or water.
It is believed that in that brief moment that Baby Zaem was playing, he went over to several big water reservoirs that were on the dock nearby. These huge vats supply water  to businesses nearby, and one of them did not have a cover on. Added to that was a stool nearby that someone left behind, and those around suspect that it was being used to do some form of testing or checks.
Baby Zaem’s uncle said that the family suspects that he climbed up on the stool, and then on top of the reservoir itself. Something happened and the baby went into the vat, but no one is sure how long he was submerged for. The parents frantically searched for him, but someone finally pulled him out of the vat. The police found persons performing CPR on him, and they immediately rushed him to the Otto Rodriguez Polyclinic, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. This tragedy has scarred his family and ruined this holiday, possibly for the rest of their lives.
The other child who almost drowned during the Easter Holiday is 9 year-old Samaria Azencio. She was swimming at the Miami Beach area of Corozal Town when she went under and took an unusual amount of time to resurface. There were other persons swimming at the same time, and they rescued her. As soon as she was brought on land 2 adults were quick to administer CPR on her. She was rushed to the Corozal Hospital, where she started responding, and shortly after that, she was transferred to the KHMH. She’s now in a critical but stable condition, and one of the persons who administered CPR to save her life has told the press that she was happy that she was there to help her. She said that she kept on thinking that what happened to little Samaria could have also happened to her kids, and so that’s why she tried so hard to save her life.
