Dangriga native Father Lawrence Nicasio has been appointed to lead the Catholic Diocese in Belize. He’s taking over from outgoing Bishop Dorick Wright, who has been locked in a prolonged struggle with severe illnesses, including kidney failure.

Bishop Christopher Glancy was consecrated in 2012, and he was brought in as an auxiliary to help Bishop Wright in managing the affairs of the church, while Wright managed his health complications. Bishop Wright will go into early retirement at age 71, and Bishop Nicasio will replace him. Bishop Glancy will remain as the auxiliary Bishop.

Speaking about his predecessor, Bishop Nicasio told the press that even though kidney dialysis is a physically taxing ordeal for most people, Bishop Wright “stays strong”, and  is “always ready to chat”.

Published information from Catholic Church says that Bishop Nicasio holds a Bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Glennon Seminary in St. Louis, USA. He also holds a Masters degree in Divinity from the Kenrich College Seminary, from the same archdiocese. He was ordained as a priest in 1989, and he has served the church all over the country.

He will be officially installed as the Bishop of Belize in May, and he has indicated that his focus will be on young Belizeans and trying to lead them to the church.
