The Ministry of Foreign affairs had to intervene in the case of 16 Belizeans who were stranded in Nicaragua after competing in the CODICADER games that are being held in Costa Rica.

The athletes formed part of a larger contingent of 108 student-athletes, 14 coaches, five chaperones, five delegates, one Chief of Mission and five other officials who traveled by bus on Tuesday of last week to Costa Rica. The students and coaching staff who participated in the athletics section of

the CODICADER games were returning home on Monday September 21 by bus but were unable to make it by road since the borders of Honduras have been closed as a result of the disturbances in that country.

The Belizean delegation had to stay in Managua, Nicaragua and was hosted by the sports ministry in that country on Tuesday before they were assisted by Belize’s Foreign Ministry who facilitated their air travel back home. The delegation arrived on Wednesday morning at the Philip Goldson International Airport, much to the pleasure of family members who had grown concerned over their safety.

While the athletes and coaching staff are back at home, unfortunately they did not return home with any medals.
