After intensive negotiations at the BSI Staff Club on Tuesday April 21, 2009, Belize Sugar Industry Workers will be receiving a seven percent wage increase.

The Negotiations were held between BSI and the Belize Workers Union which sought the wage increase for all hourly-paid permanent employees at BSI. The agreement was to have the wage increase be retroactive to January 1, 2009 and will expire on June 30, 2010.

Chief negotiator on behalf of the Union was Horris Patten, while BSI’s representative was Lennox Neal. While the wage increase has been negotiated, the Union states that the agreement will only be implemented after approval from the general membership of both the Orange Walk and Corozal Branches of the BWU takes place. It is expected that the membership will ratify the agreement by May 1, Labour Day.
