The Ministry of Agriculture and farmers in western Belize are on high alert after reports are that a swarm of locusts may be making their way into the country. Ministry field officers are out scouting agricultural areas to determine early entry locations.
Ministry personnel say that they have concerns over the exponential growth of the insect population as the climate conditions are perfect for that to occur. There is a concern over the pest’s possible entry into the country as they are indiscriminate in their feeding and are known to decimate cash crops such as corn and vegetables.
