Killed two days after being released from prison

Egbert Baldwin

Hours prior to the double murder in Cayo which claimed the lives of Samuel Hill and Windell Trapp, there was a shooting murder in Ladyville, Belize District. In this incident, 22-year-old Egbert Emmanuel Baldwin was the victim. Police responded to a shooting incident on Egbert Quilter Avenue in the village at about 7:10 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2020. There, they met Baldwin, a resident of the village, with gunshot wounds to the body. His body was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
A second man, 44-year-old Ronald Cole, was also injured in the process but has been admitted in a stable condition. Initial police investigations revealed that earlier that night, Baldwin was riding a bicycle from a friend’s house when on Jackson Avenue, two men approached him and fired several shots in his direction. This caused the fatal injuries to Baldwin as well as the one gunshot injury which Cole suffered. Although Baldwin attempted the escape the barrage of bullets, he only managed to get some hundred feet away. He then collapsed before a police mobile was able to get him to the hospital.
Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero, Deputy Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch, says that this is no random crime, but rather, a result of an ongoing gang rivalry in the area. Important to note is that just days before, on July 15, Baldwin had been released from prison where he was remanded for attempted murder. Baldwin and Darwin Prado were freed of three counts of attempted murder upon Terrence Flowers Jr., Casey Lozano, and Lyndon Gillett for a shooting that occurred in a yard on Compassion Lane in Ladyville on the night of May 13, 2016.
