Bail for food vendor caught with counterfeit

Darrell Robert Gray

Darrell Robert Gray, a food vendor, was arraigned on a charge of possession of counterfeit notes. The Belize City resident appeared before Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson and before entering a plea, asked the court for guidance. He explained that while he did have the counterfeit cash in his possession, he got it from a man while selling fudge. As such, an equivocal plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf and he was offered bail in the sum of $1,500 plus one surety of the same amount. He was able to meet his bail and is due back in court on September 18, 2020.
Gray was found with the counterfeit cash on Saturday, July 18, 2020 on Flamboyant Street in Belize City. Officers on patrol report seeing someone acting uneasy and as a result, they stopped and searched him. Inside his pockets, they found a $5 and a $100 bill and upon closer inspection, one of the officers noticed that the $100 was not genuine. Gray explained that he had made a sale and was given the cash from someone who purchased fudge.
