Premier Football League Competition opens

The 2009 Belize Premier Football League Competition Cup opened last weekend with six games across the country.

On Saturday April 18, in the South Zone game played at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence Village, Georgetown Ibayani defeated Wagiya by the score of 5-0. Ashley Torres scored the 1st goal of the 2009 campaign when he put Georgetown Ibayani on the scoreboard in the 6th minute of play. The first half of the game ended 1-0 in favour of the home team Georgetown Ibayani.

In the second half, Georgetown Ibayani offence came alive when it scored four more times. Bernard Linarez scored for the Georgetown Ibayani in the 66th, 79th, and 83rd minute of play. Alexander Peters scored the final goal of the game in the 90th minute of play.

On Sunday April 19, in the first game of the afternoon played out at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, Hankook Verdes defeated Scorpions by the score of 2-0. Amin August scored the 1st goal of the game in the 8th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead.  Everal Gabourel scored the 2nd goal of the game in the 60th minute of play for the big win.

At the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga, llagulei defeated Tafari by the score of 4-1. Elroy Kuylen scored the 1st goal of the game in the 6th minute of play to give his team the lead. Aaron McLaughlin scored the 2nd goal of the game in the 11th minute of play to extend the lead. Gilbert Swazo scored the 3rd goal of the game in the 12th minute of play. The first half of the game ended 3-0 in favour of llagulei.

The visiting Tafari Team from Punta Gorda got on the scoreboard when Adrian Usher scored his team’s only goal in the 72nd minute of play to cut the deficit by three.

Derwin Castillo scored the final goal of the game in the 90th minute of play for llagulei.

In the North Zone games played on Sunday April 19, at Ambergris Stadium, San Pedro Bullsharks defeated San Pedro Dolphins by the score of 3-2. The San Pedro Bullsharks got on the scoreboard first when Daniel Caliz scored in the 24th minute of play to give his team a temporary lead. The lead was further increased when Tonbra Akpobodor in the 52nd minute of play.

In the second half of the game San Pedro Dolphins got on the scoreboard when Kenny Witzil scored his first goal of the game in the 69th minute of play to cut the deficit by one. His second goal came in the 78th minute of play to tie the score at 2-2. David Trapp scored San Pedro’s Bullsharks winning goal in the 85th minute of play.

At the Ricalde Stadium the defending champion Nizhee Corozal and the Belize Defence Force played to a 2-2 draw.  The defending champion Nizhee Corozal got on the scoreboard first when Emmette Vernon scored his first of two goals in the 30th minute of play and his second goal in the 38th minute of play. Meanwhile, the Belize Defence Force got on the scoreboard when Jeromy James scored his team’s first goal in the 48th minute of play to pull his team within one. Isidoro Lara seconded the equalizing goal for the Belize Defence Force in the 90th minute of play via a penalty kick.

In the final game of the day played at the MCC Grounds, FC Belize defeated Suga Boys Guinea Grass by the score 2-1.  The visiting Suga Boys Guinea Grass got on the scoreboard when Marlon Miranda scored his team only goal in the 33rd minute of play.

It was not until the closing minutes of the second half of the game that FC Belize got on the scoreboard when Floyd Jones scored his team’s first goal in the 80th minute of play to cut the deficit. Byron Usher scored the final goal of the game in the 82nd minute of play for the victory.
