One person is dead and another detained following a fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of an elderly man. The incident took place on Saturday, June 6 on the Lemonal Village Road. Police were called to the scene where they met the lifeless body of a male person, later identified as 87-year-old Thomas Sutherland, with injuries to the body. The body was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where it was pronounced dead.
What investigators have learned so far is that the driver of the motorcycle knocked down and killed Sutherland. Instead of stopping to render aid, he fled the scene and was later found with his damaged motorcycle by police. He has since been identified as 18-year-old Leeron Muslar. He was arrested and charged on eight counts relating to Sutherland’s death. Those include manslaughter by negligence, failure to report an accident, causing death by careless conduct, failure to stop and render aid, use of a motor vehicle without third-party insurance, driving an unlicensed motor vehicle, and use of an unregistered motor vehicle, and driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention.
He appeared in the Belize City’s Magistrate court where he was represented by attorney Orson OJ Elrington. No plea was taken from Muslar since it is an indictable offense. He was offered bail of $4,000 with a surety of the same amount.
