The Rotary Club of San Ignacio is having a River Clean-up on Saturday, June 5th, 2021, for World Environment Day. Their clean-up will start at 6:00 a.m. at the Wooden Bridge from the Santa Elena side. The area to be cleaned will be from the wooden bridge to the Hawkesworth Bridge.
The Rotary Club is inviting the community to come out and help. Members of the public is reminded to bring gloves, garbage bags, and hand sanitizer, and also to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
A note from the United Nations website on the day, states that World Environmental Day can involve many small actions such as growing trees, greening our cities, rewilding our gardens, or cleaning up trash alongside rivers and coasts.
During the last few years, the Japanese Embassy has invested heavily in Belize on garbage compactor trucks for municipalities. This was done to reduce the entry of plasticized fragments into our rivers, which eventually end up in the Caribbean Sea. The efforts from Rotary for this weekend only strengthens that aim.
