There was another murder in Belize City, this time on Faber’s Road on Thursday, May 20. 19-year-old Stephan Castillo was at a mechanic and carwash business, located not too far away from the area’s police sub-station, when he came under fire. Reports are that at around 1:30 p.m., a vehicle had slowly driven past before once again returning to the area. It is from inside that vehicle that the gunfire was unleashed on the unsuspecting victim.
Residents in the area suspect that this murder was connected to the spate of gun violence which has taken over the city. Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) Chester Williams says that, unfortunately, Castillo was simply in the wrong neighborhood while trying to make his living. Castillo allegedly had affiliations with a warring group and for that reason, he was targeted away from home.
Police in the area were able to pursue a vehicle and during that pursuit, a firearm was reportedly thrown from the vehicle. That 9mm pistol, believed to be the weapon used to execute Castillo, was recovered by police and has been submitted for evidence. The vehicle itself was later intercepted and police were able to find the notorious Orel Leslie, who has himself had his fair share of run-ins with the law. He was detained and while investigators are looking for any evidence between him and the murder of Castillo, COMPOL Williams says that he will at least be charged for having a prohibited firearm. Investigators are also seeking an additional five persons who were believed to be inside the vehicle.
