In July 2016, one man reportedly shot and killed a second man over a money dispute the two were having. The accused, identified as Ashton Puerto, has since faced the judicial system and has been sentenced to 17 years in prison. He was sentenced in the Belmopan
Supreme Court where he was found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Puerto was charged in July 2016 for the murder of Maleek Norris which took place in Roaring Creek Village. Puerto and Norris had a dispute over money and a bicycle and, despite warnings from relatives to forget the issue, the two met up. On July 10, 2016
during that meeting in the Another World area of the village, Puerto shot Norris.
