Teachers from the Stann Creek branch of the Belize National Teacher’s Union gathered in Dangriga on Wednesday, March 10 to begin the process of resistance to a proposed 10 percent salary cut for public officers. They are the first to have mobilized in resistance and held a motorcade throughout Dangriga Town. With placards posted on the fronts and sides of their vehicles the teachers made their discontent known.
Some of the placards read:
“10% cut dah nothing fi U!! 10% cut dah everything fi me!!” “Increment freeze, Why me?”
“No to Salary cuts, No to increment freeze”
“everybody fi win… price of regular is over $10 now….we need to walk and ride bikes more …might soon have to mule and cart again.” [sic]
The teachers are the first to publicly challenge the Briceño administration’s proposed salary cut and increment freeze (see story on page 2).
National President of the BNTU, Elena Smith has gone on record to say that they are in the process of consulting their membership to see their next move. She says any action to be taken will be done so by way of concensus.
