Municipal Elections were conducted countrywide and the United Democratic Party fielded full slates across the country for a total of 67 seats, nine mayoral and 58 councilor seats despite suffering a massive defeat just three months ago on November 11, 2020.
Preliminary information had the UDP register losses in Belmopan, Orange Walk, Corozal, San Pedro, Punta Gorda and the Dangriga municipalities. A loss was also recorded in Belize City, but ground was maintained in the Collet, Mesopotamia, Albert and Queen’s Square Divisions.
As we prepare this issue, results were not clear from San Ignacio/Santa Elena; however, unofficially there will be a split council where Mayor Earl Trapp, Jr. will retain his seat as a UDP mayor. He will be joined by councilor Bernadette Fernandez. In Benque Viejo, it was still a tight race with clear winners not being determined.
Simultaneous to the Municipal Elections was a by-election in the Corozal Bay Division following the death of PUP Area Representative, David ‘Dido’ Vega as a result of Covid-19 exactly one month after the November 2020 elections. Contesting that election was four-time Corozal Town Mayor, Hilberto Campos, who went up against sister of David Vega, Elvia Vega-Samos. That election saw the PUP winning unofficially with large numbers.
