There have been a number of crimes taking place all over the country from incidents of piracy to home invasions. In Yemeri Grove, Toledo, William Haught was a victim of an armed invasion at his residence from where a number of items including a licensed firearm were stolen. It took place on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 when, as Haught explains, he was returning home from conducting business in Punta Gorda Town. He had left home at around 10:00 a.m., leaving his caretaker behind, and when he returned sometime after noon, he was accosted by three persons all of dark complexion. The men all wore masks and were armed and managed to bind both Haught and his caretaker. They demanded money and went on to ransack the home before making off with his licensed shotgun, which was inside his vehicle. The men left and after freeing himself, Haught made his way to his village’s chairperson who called the police.
Just a few days later, there was another home invasion, this time in San Ignacio, Cayo. The victim of this incident is Contractor General Omar Mitchell, who was accosted by five men on Sunday, February 21, 2021. He reported that sometime after 7:00 a.m., he heard his dogs barking and when he made checks, he was approached by a male persons who subdued him. He was then joined by four other persons who bound Mitchell before ransacking his home. The thieves were able to make off with both his vehicles, a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Prado. After they left, Mitchell shouted for his neighbor’s assistance and called the police. ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch, says that the police have spotted the vehicles crossing into Guatemala through Arenal. Investigations into both incidents are underway.
