Weed found inside kitchen lands man in court

Ansel Ciego

27-year-old Ansel Ciego has been fined $1,000 plus the $5 cost of court to be paid by May 31, 2021 after pleading guilty to possession simplicita. The unemployed resident of West Street, Belize City appeared in court on Friday, February 12 to answer to a charge of drug trafficking. According to police, on the day before, a search was conducted at his home which led to the discovery of three black plastic bags containing a leafy-like substance suspected to be cannabis near a stove inside his kitchen.
In court, Ciego was unrepresented and pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking but guilty to possession simplicita. The prosecution accepted this plea despite the drugs amounting almost nine times the threshold for drug trafficking.
