On the night of Tuesday, February 9, 2021, a traffic accident which took place on the Stann Creek Valley Road claimed the life of 26-year-old Arita Vanzie and left three others injured. She was travelling inside a four-door Chevrolet Impala along with driver of the vehicle 21-year-old Damion Usher, Customs Officer 24-year-old Deon Castillo, and Zane Zuniga. It is reported that Usher lost control of the vehicle before running into a ditch and hitting a culvert. Vanzie died while receiving treatment at the Southern Regional Hospital and the three others were transported to the hospital for treatment.
Police have since reported that those three persons have been released from the hospital and that Usher has been issued a notice of intended prosecution (NIP) pending the result of Vanzie’s post mortem examination. ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch, says that from what investigators have gathered, excessive speeding seems to have been a factor in this accident.
