The United Democratic Party has named the three senators which will fill the positions that are allotted to the opposition in the Senate. During a virtual press conference held on Wednesday December 9, UDP Party Leader, Hon. Patrick Faber announced that, all attorneys, Michael Peyrefitte, Aldo Salazar and Sheena Pitts will take up the positions of Senators.
While these persons will now represent the UDP in the Senate, Hon. Faber explained that in the case of Salazar, he will only be temporarily holding the position until Belmopan Mayor, Khalid Belisle’s tenure in that office comes to an end in March. At that time municipal elections will be due and, not seeking the office again, Belisle will take up the position of senator.
Speaking of the appointments, Hon. Faber explained that the UDP is in the process of rebuilding and the senators are representative of a mix of both new persons and those who have held these positions before. Peyrefitte has previously served in various capacities including Attorney General, President of the Senate and Leader of Government Business in the Senate among other roles. He also is currently the Chairman of the UDP. Aldo Salazar has served in various capacities within the hierarchy of the party and most prominently as a Senator. UDP Party Leader described him as a young individual who has significantly contributed to the UDP. Then he went on to introduce Sheena Pitts who, as the Party Leader explained is a young and powerful young woman who comes from the bowels of the UDP being the daughter of former Attorney General B.Q. Pitts.
Hon. Faber explained that the appointees are competent and well deserving and “these individuals will represent the opposition and the people of Belize very well.”
