Over the past two weeks since the People’s United Party have taken over the reigns of government, Belizeans have literally been dying left, right and center. There has been an explosion of murders across the country. Parallel to that is the death toll as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. 125 Belizeans have died so far and there is no end in sight. Even as the streets run red and the hospitals are overrun with Covid patients, the government has had absolutely no response.
It is during these times that leaders are tested and it is now being proven that the People’s United Party has absolutely no capacity for leadership. This is being proven both from the Prime Ministerial level down to the Ministers. Briceño is clueless as to what needs to be done to address the mounting problems facing the nation and those he has appointed as ministers, in particular, the ministers of health and home affairs have presented no plan on how the Covid and crime problems will be tackled.
On the night of Tuesday November 24, police in riot gear had to be deployed to the St. Martin’s de Porres Area, which has ignited into an all out battleground between rival gangs and still there is no guidance from the minister, Kareem Musa.
As for Covid, two weeks into his portfolio and all that we see Michel Chebat doing is touring health facilities. There is no clear indication as to how the pandemic will be addressed. All that we hear is that they are working on a plan. The plan it seems will see all Belizeans infected before it is unveiled.
We are truly living in a sorry sad state. Crime is out of control and Covid is out of control and we have no hope that the PUP government will be able to take us out of these problems.
