As part of the Belize Police Department’s Action Plan 2020-2030, there was an emphasis on health and life benefits. The Plan was implemented under Commissioner of Police Chester Williams for the rank and file of the Department to become involved in a Police Welfare Offering, a sort of insurance scheme. The officers would volunteer to pay a monthly sum which would be used in the case of illness, emergency, or death benefits paid out. Diversified Life Solutions Brokers Ltd., an independent insurance intermediary licensed to place business with local insurers, has been involved in the carrying out of this benefit plan and on Wednesday, November 25, 2020, were able to deliver a cheque to Elodia Mena.
Mena is the wife of the late Cpl. Annibal Mena who was involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday, September 3, 2020. Just 10 days later, on Saturday, September 13, he succumbed to the injuries sustained in that accident. Police Constable Anibal Mena was traveling on a motorcycle heading to Chan Chen in Corozal when he was knocked down by someone driving a pickup. The driver of the Toyota Hilux, Santiago Victorin, swerved into his lane, causing a head-on collision. PC Mena sustained severe head injuries and was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City for treatment but later succumbed. It is for financial assistance in PC Mena’s death that his wife was issued a cheque. Present at the handing over were Hon. Kareem Musa, COMPOL Chester Williams, ACP Dr. Richard Rosado, and Harrison Pilgrim from Diversified Life Solutions.
Each of the abovementioned persons were sure to encourage more police officers to become involved in the benefit program. In just four years, when only some 100 officers were involved, close to 500 officers are now a part of the program.
