In June 2019, eight-year-old Gabriella Corales was knocked down and killed while attempting to cross a pedestrian ramp on her way to her school in Belmopan, Cayo. She was on the way to Our Lady of Guadalupe RC School where she was a standard two student when life took an unexpected turn. A 15-year-old Guatemalan national, who was illegally driving an SUV, was the person found responsible for Corales’s death.
At the time of the incident, the minor was charged with a number of offenses including manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, and driving without a valid driver’s license. More than a year later, on October 29, 2020, these charges were withdrawn from against the minor. This is because the mother of the victim, Anna Ramirez, informed the court that she no longer wished to pursue court action against the accused.
