Rodman Welch
Shakeem Dennison

Police have been able to arrest and charge the man they believe to be responsible for the shooting murder of Shakeem Dennison. That man is Rodman Welch, a stevedore and resident of Faber’s Road in Belize City. On Friday, October 16, Welch was escorted to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court where he was read the charge of murder. He appeared before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford, who explained that because of the indictable nature of the offense, no plea could be taken. Furthermore, no bail could be offered and Welch was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until December 30.
The murder of Dennison took place on Monday, October 12, 2020 when the 26-year-old was on the basketball court in the Yarborough area of Belize City. He was playing basketball just before 5:00 p.m. when a gunman rode up on the court on a motorcycle and opened fire. Dennison laid injured on the court and police arrived on the scene some time later. Despite an attempt to rush him to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. At the time of the incident, a suspect was described as a person of dark complexion, slim built, and about 5 feet 9 inches. He drove a black motorcycle from the Yarborough Cemetery and after shooting Dennison, fled toward the Yarborough Bridge.
