Murder at Yarborough Court

Shakeem Dennison

There were a number of incidents over the weekend which now have the hands of the Belize Police Department (BPD) full. On Monday, October 12, 2020, 26-year-old Shakem Dennison was shot and killed on the basketball court in the Yarborough Area of Belize City. He was playing basketball just before 5:00 p.m. when a gunman rode up on the court on a motorcycle and opened fire. The loud bang of gunshots could be heard throughout the community and when the noise died down, Dennison laid injured on the court. Police arrived on the scene some time later and despite an attempt to rush him to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
A suspect in this incident has been described as a person of dark complexion, is slim built, and stands at about 5 feet 9 inches. He rode a black motorcycle from the Yarborough Cemetery and after shooting Dennison, fled toward the Yarborough Bridge. The police have not yet been able to establish a motive in this incident but are interviewing family members. They say that their loved one was not involved in any gang activity and as a result, are at a loss as to why someone would want to kill Dennison.
