Since March of this year, when COVID-19 first began to plague our country, there have been a total of 34 COVID-19 related deaths. Most recently, as many as four deaths, three men and one woman, have been reported within a 24-hour period. This data comes from the Office of the Director of Health Services (DHS) which shared an infographic and more details on the deaths as well as our current numbers. All four deceased persons were from Orange Walk, two from Orange Walk Town, one from San Felipe, and one from Trinidad Village. Three of the four deaths were reported at the Northern Regional Hospital while the fourth was at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH.)
It is very distressing news but the trend has shown that a majority of COVID-19 related deaths have occurred in older persons and persons with underlying health conditions. As a result, the Ministry of Health (MOH) through the DHS’s office along with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has developed an infographic toward that group. They are given tips for an active lifestyle and to strengthen their immune system. They are especially encouraged to exercise daily, to consume healthy foods and enough water, to reduce the intake of salt, sugar, and fat, and to get enough sleep. Aside from seeing this trend in older adults, important to note also is that a majority of cases have been reported in the Orange Walk District.
In the latest infographic, eleven additional cases were identified in the district, taking the district’s total now to 835 confirmed cases. Five of these cases were found in Orange Walk Town and one each in Trial Farm, Carmelita, August Pine Ridge, Trinidad, Tower Hill, and San Felipe. That eleven comes from 39 newly identified cases found of a total 175 samples processed on Tuesday, October 6. Fourteen cases were found in the Belize District with nine in Belize City, one from Guinea Grass, one each in Ladyville and Caye Caulker, and two in San Pedro. In total, there are now 403 confirmed cases in the district, and 322 confirmed in San Pedro. Twelve cases were identified in Corozal, four in town, three in Xaibe, two in Santa Clara, and one each in Progresso, Calcutta, and Concepcion. There are now 296 confirmed cases in that district and just behind them is Cayo with 283 cases. Stann Creek stands with sixty-six confirmed cases and, with two new cases identified in San Pedro Columbia, there are now thirty-eight confirmed cases in Toledo.
There are fourteen additional recoveries to report, taking that total to 1,392, or 62.1% of the total 2,243 confirmed cases. There are 817 active cases, or 36.4% and thirty-four deaths or 1.5%.
