The active cases of COVID-19 in Belize now stands at 35.6%, 692 cases of a total 1,943 confirmed cases. A recent infographic from the Office of the Director of Health Services (DHS) shows that an additional fifty-two cases were identified from a total 224 samples processed on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. Of those, one was located in San Pedro Columbia in the Toledo District. Since the first case was confirmed in the country, the Toledo District has managed to contain community or otherwise spreading, only seeing a total of twenty confirmed cases to date.
Behind them is the Stann Creek District with 52, the second lowest number in the country by district. None of the last fifty-two cases were identified in the Stann Creek district but in Cayo, eight additional cases have been identified. Six were located in Belmopan, one in Spanish Lookout, and one from Ladyville but swabbed in San Ignacio. These numbers bring the total for the Cayo District to 270 confirmed cases whereas 240 confirmed cases have been identified in the Corozal District. Seven cases have recently been identified in that district, with three in Concepcion, one in Chan Chen, one in Paraiso, and two in Corozal Town. In the Belize District, which has now started to consistently see the second highest number of confirmed cases in the country, nine cases were recently identified. Six were identified in the city while two were identified in the Hattieville community and one in Lord’s Bank. The district is now seeing 347 of the 1,943 confirmed cases. While San Pedro falls within the Belize district, for the intents of the COVID-19 classifications and seeing that the island had erupted with its own clusters, those numbers were separated. As a result, San Pedro has 350 identified confirmed cases, the third highest in the country, only outdone by the Orange Walk District. For weeks, there has been a consistent upward trend of confirmed cases in the Orange Walk district, greatly attributed to illegal border jumpers and contrabandistas. That district alone accounts for 709 confirmed cases, 36.4% of the total confirmed cases in the entire country. Twenty-seven of these have just recently been identified in the last set of tests. Ten were identified in town, three in Carmelita and San Jose, two each in Guinea Grass, Tower Hill, and San Estevan, and one in Chan Pine Ridge, Trial Farm, Trinidad, Nuevo San Juan, and August Pine Ridge.
Recovered cases now stand at 63%, citing 1,225 recoveries and seventeen recorded in the last report. On the downside, the report further informs of two more COVID-19 related deaths, both in the Orange Walk district. One of the victims was a female in her 70s who had been admitted at the Northern Regional Hospital. Her condition worsened, causing her to pass away. The second person was a man in his 60s. Unfortunately for him, it had not been confirmed that he was COVID-19 positive. He had been admitted to the hospital and passed within the same day. His diagnosis was not made until after his death.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Office of the DHS reminds the public to ensure best practices are being down both at home and in public. Likewise, continue to exercise prevention measures.
