A virtual event to celebrate the 222nd anniversary of Battle of St. George’s Caye has been held in the Twin Towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena. Master of ceremonies for this event was Alberto August, a prominent citizen from the Twin Towns.
In his main speech, Mayor Earl Trapp Junior reminded us that for the Tenth Celebrations we continue to embrace the legacies of the past as we prepare for our 39th year of celebrating Independence. Mayor Trapp said that even though Belize faces a COVID 19 pandemic “together we can overcome those challenges.”
Mayor Trapp took out the time to recognize three prominent citizens from the Twin Towns who have led by example. These exemplary citizens are Ethel Bernadine Ellis, Desol Neal, and Fidel Cuellar Senior for dedication to education, neighborhood watches, and spreading the good gospel, respectively.
Also speaking in the virtual celebrations was Queen of the West Kimberly Santos. According to Santos, even though COVID-19 has sparked fear and frustration, our communities have supported each other to find resilience, love, and hope. Santos called on us all to give to families in need and provide support to students as they study online.
Also giving support to the 10th virtual celebration was Belize’s First Runner up to the 2020 Queen of the Bay Pageant, Meesha Magdaleno. Also coming first place in the talent competition for the National Pageant, Magdaleno thanked Mayor Earl Trapp for his support.
In his vote of thanks, Councilor George Boiton recognized Pastor Eliu Yacab for his opening prayer. He also thanked the Children Advisory Board, the Hon. Dr. Omar Figueroa, the Pandy Show, and the National Channel for giving support to the virtual presentation.
In a posted message from Cayo Central, the Hon. Rene Montero states as follows: As we prepare to celebrate the Battle of St. George’s Caye Day in a new state of “normal”, history will record the battles that our young nation is currently fighting. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on Belize’s Economy that threatens our lives and livelihoods. Let us be reminded of the battle won on this day by the brave men defending our Country. In this same way, let us unite and fight this deadly virus by following the established protocols. Thus far, our people have demonstrated their bravery in fighting this deadly virus and remain resilient against all adversities. Together we can overcome, together we will prosper! Long live Belize! May God Bless you all and Stay Safe!
