George Pech, a 27-year-old construction worker and resident of San Roman, Corozal has been fined $500 after pleading guilty to theft of a bicycle valued at $220. This incident took place on August 22, 2020 when Pech stole a 16-inch beach cruiser, property of Calbert Daniels. In court, Pech pleaded guilty to the charge with an explanation. He informed Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser that he and Daniels were socializing together when they ran out of money. Pech alleges that Daniels gave him the bicycle to sell but that he never got to sell the bicycle. Pech says that he did not return with the bicycle, however, and that is why Daniels reported the bicycle as stolen. In court, Pech apologized for his actions and claimed to have already returned the bicycle to Daniels.
Pech also told Chief Magistrate Fraser that he was a victim of police brutality while in their custody. In court, he showed his injuries on the right side of his body. He says that a police officer took a stick which he used to hit him in the face and side for no apparent reason. Pech says that he just wants his freedom and, as such, will not be pursuing any civil suit against the police.
