An 18-year-old accused of theft is on bail, despite being caught committing the crime on surveillance camera. Damion Saldano, a stevedore of George Street in Belize City, appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. It is alleged that on Friday, March 13, 2020, he snatched a gold chain valued at $1,200 from around the neck of 63-year-old Erica Cattouse. Cattouse says that it was at around 8:30 a.m. while sitting in her car on King Street that someone pushed their hand through her car window and snatched the chain from off her neck. She managed to get a look at the person, who had just stolen her chain and police also viewed surveillance footage in the area, corroborating Cattouse’s version of events. An eyewitness to the theft also said to the police that she saw Saldano steal the chain, and that he is someone that she has known for over two years.
Saldano was arrested, charged, and arraigned in court for the charge of theft. He pleaded not guilty and since there was no objection to bail, he was offered bail of $3,000 plus one surety of the same. He was able to meet bail but was ordered to stay away from Cattouse, whether directly or indirectly. Saldano is due back in court on May 18, 2020.
