Kareem the grandstander

The brightest bulb in the PUP shone on Tuesday, January 28, of course we are referring to Kareem Musa. And more than just shining, to quote Channel 7’s Jules Vasquez, he took the opportunity to grand stand. After many days of contemplation, this attorney came up with a mind-boggling revelation. He told Belizeans that the Belizean government should employ the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), which was signed for cooperation on criminal matters between the U.S. and Belize. He said that the Prime Minister and the Attorney General should use the MLAT to find out what are the contents of those supposed texts messages between an accused criminal in the U.S. and a Belizean official.
No sooner had he filled the airwaves with his nonsense than the Attorney General, Hon. Michael Peyrefitte had answered. The AG made Kareem look like a novice, if he isn’t, “If you look at the MLAT Treaty that was brought down in the Mutual Legal Assistance Act, if you look at page one, page one tells you in this case, Belize can only request information from the United States if an investigation has commenced in Belize or a prosecution has commenced or something to that effect. We need information or documentation from the U.S. There is no investigation or prosecution going on here in Belize in relation to anything that’s happening in Utah, so on what basis would we ask the Americans for that information? Just because wih fass? No, that’s not the basis, that’s not how a treaty works. It tells you that I must first certify that we are investigating a fraud similar to what’s happening in Utah and its effects here or something. We’re not doing that, we didn’t even know about this before there was a trial in the U.S. So we have no basis for asking the Americans that.” That ought to have been enough to silence Musa, but Hon. Sen. Peyrefitte took it even further.
He stated that, “you do not get documentation from a requested state in the middle of a trial. They selected their jury yesterday and the case supposed to have started today. They’re not going to give you their evidence before they tender that evidence into court; I mean this is just stupid grandstanding on behalf of the P.U.P. What do they think that they would accomplish by that?…thirdly… this trial should be over by about early March or, we know Jacob Kingston who is supposedly one of the major witnesses will testify probably first or the second witness to testify, so we will know very soon what he has to say. The time it would take for me to certify that there is an imaginary case going on in Belize, the time for me to request that of the Attorney General of the United States, the time it would take for him to then request that of the prosecution in Utah, even if it were a solidly founded request, even if it was a legitimate request, what we would do now would take much longer than if we just listen to hear what the evidence will be at the trial. So I just think it’s a desperate attempt on behalf of the P.U.P. to gain some attention or to try to seem as if though they are relevant or genuinely care about what’s going on.”
With that Hon. Sen. Peyrefitte put the grandstander and his grand ideas to sleep. How much will it hurt to simply wait until the disclosures are made in the trial and from there proceed?
