Edward P. Yorke places 1st and 2nd for CSEC

The Ministry of Education has announced the 2019 outstanding performance for Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) examinations. Topping this year’s sitting of the CSEC exams is Alexis Guy, a student of Edward Percival York High School (EPYHS). Guy sat a total of eighteen general proficiency papers, earning as many as seventeen grade ones (the highest score) and a single grade two. She attained grade ones in Agricultural Science Single Award; Biology; Chemistry; English A; English B (Literature); Information Technology (IT); Integrated Science; Mathematics; Office Administration (OA); Physics; Principles of Accounts (POA); Principles of Business (POB); Religious Education; Spanish; Electronic Document Preparation and Management (EDP&M); Physical Education (PE) and Sport; and Human and Social Biology (HSB). She gained a grade two in Social Studies and also achieved first place for English B (Literature) and Principles of Business (POB).
Not too far behind is Dayana Marroquin, also of EPYHS, who is this year’s Outstanding Candidate. She sat sixteen CSEC examinations of which she attained fourteen grade ones and two grade twos. Marroquin received grade ones in Agriculture Single Award; Biology; Chemistry; English A; Information Technology (IT); Integrated Science; Mathematics; Office Administration (OA); Physics; Principles of Business (POB); Social Studies; Spanish; Electronic Document Preparation and Management (EDP&M); and Human and Social Biology (HSB). She got grade twos in English B (Literature) and Religious Education and will receive the Subject Group Award in the Sciences.
Angie Matute, again of EPHYS, will receive the Subject Group Award in Technical/Vocational. Additionally, Matute is recognized as the Regional Subject Group Awardee in Technical/Vocational. The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has invited Matute to a ceremony to be held in Grenada where she will be presented with an award for Most Outstanding performance in Technical Vocational in the Region.
As it relates to the CAPE Examinations, Liyan David Moralez from the Corozal Junior College is this year’s Most Outstanding Candidate and is the recipient of the Belize Scholarship having obtained eight grade one passes. Randel Pate, also from Corozal Junior College, is the Outstanding Candidate having attained six grade one passes.
The Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports, and Culture provides financial assistance for students to sit up to six CSEC examinations. Through this initiative, 3,695 candidates registered to sit a total of 26,839 subject entries in 2018-2019 academic year. In addition, based on their successful performance, scholarship grants to attend tertiary institutions were provided by the Ministry of Education to 1,188 Belizean students. The Ministry congratulates to all schools, teachers, parents, and most importantly, the students who have demonstrated excellence. This year’s national awards ceremony takes place on November 29, 2019 in the Independence Village.
