Progress is now truly evident in the village of El Progresso in the Cayo District after an electricity expansion program was inaugurated in the village on Friday, February 1. The project saw the electrification of the entire village with power lines being installed. Costing some 650 thousand dollars, the project will benefit some 250 families in the village. Funding for the electrification came through collaboration between the Government of Belize and the European Union.
Area Representative for Cayo Central, Hon. Rene Montero, explained that it was a promise of his to the people of El Progresso and he was happy to have been able to deliver. He added that all other villages, nine of them, in his constituency already have electricity with the most remote one being La Gracia, which has a solar system. According to Minister Montero, with electricity there will now be greater economic opportunities for residents including in the area of tourism where now those visiting can have the commodity offered by electricity.
It is interesting to note that for years the village had light posts installed but there was no power lines placed on them.
