Miss Maria is over 80 years old; she along with her husband had tenured of a parcel of land in the Corozal District but as vindictive as the PUP are, the land was taken away and was granted to one of their cronies. That was over 30 years ago, and since then no payment was made by the person, who was granted the new lease to the land. Since then she has been trying to recover her land and it was not until Friday, November 1 that she was able to get some attention.
She waited patiently in line at the Corozal Civic Center in the hopes of seeing both her Area Representative, Hon. Pablo Marin and Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Hugo Patt. When it was time to give her attention, she was pleasantly surprised, so much so that she began to cry-tears of joy as she had been finally able to solve a 30-year old problem. Hon. Hugo Patt, because of non-payment, cancelled the existing lease and re-issued it to the very emotional octogenarian. She was even given an affordable purchase price of $300 dollars which has since been paid and now the title to her land is in the process of being issued.
It is the type of story that time and again is for now repeating itself in the Corozal District. Over the past month and a half, the lands department has been engaged in an exercise in which the lands department has established a mobile lands unit. The purpose of the endeavor is to reach out to persons, who would not ordinarily have either the time or the resources to visit the department to sort out their land problems. Most recently, between Wednesday October 30 and Friday November 1, over 1000 instruments were issued in Corozal Town. According to Area Representative, Hon. Pablo Marin, these instruments included leases, purchase prices as well as opening of locked accounts.
