The United Democratic Party is experiencing one of its most historic periods yet. It started on Monday, October 21 when Area Representative for the Albert Division, Hon. Tracy Taegar-Panton handed in her application as she aspires to be the Deputy Party Leader of the UDP. The announcement was met with great enthusiasm as it is the first time in Belize’s political history that a woman has expressed interest and more so acted on that interest to hold the position of being the second highest ranking individual in the country. In no other party has such promotion of women taken place and the announcement was welcomed by all not only because Hon. Tracy is a woman, but by virtue of her being a go-getter dynamic individual. She has proven time and again that she can represent her constituency well, while at the same time administering a large portfolio such as the one she hold in the Ministry of Investment and Trade.
The convention has gotten much more interesting than that however as on Tuesday, October 22, the party received yet another application for the position of First Deputy. Area Representative for Corozal North, Hon. Hugo Patt has also put in his name into the race. Being the youngest representative in the country, Hon. Patt brings in fresh ideas and the ability to think outside the box. His transformative management of the Lands Department proves that he has excellent administrative capacity. Coupled with that is the fact that he has twice delivered the Corozal North division each time by a larger margin. His seat is considered one of the safest seats in the country.
Historic times indeed and the United Democratic Party is proving that from within its ranks we can attract individuals with great capacity in both administrative as well as the ability to deal with people. Both these leaders have delivered their constituency due to hard work and commitment to people and any of them will do the same on a national level.
