The Social Security Board is reporting a staggering amount of payments which it has been making as a result of the Dengue outbreak in Belize. The Board says that between January to December of 2018 they honored 125 claims for dengue-related illnesses that amounted to monetary payments of some $8,738. This year that amount has grown astronomically. For the same period between January and September this year there have been 824 sickness claims as a result of dengue and that has forced the Social Security Board to make payments of some $163,686.
The board states that the highest number of dengue claims that have ever been recorded was in the month of September of this year with a total of 293 claims.
Figures for October are now being compiled and the claims keep coming. Meanwhile the Ministry of Health is aggressively trying to control the outbreak of dengue by both spraying for the vector as well as through education.
We will keep following up on this story as it develops.
