Twenty U.S based teachers fanned out to several primary schools in the Cayo District this week. As part of the Belize Education Project, the visitors focused on comprehension strategies, self monitoring and other skills.
“Constant focus is being able to assess the learners and differentiate instructions based on that assessment,” said Dr. Jean Kirshner, who has been bringing her group for the past 12 years and is now very familiar with the different instructors at the various primary schools.
On their arrival on Sunday, the teachers were “breaking bread together” in preparation for this week’s intense educational activities, closely following the Ministry of Education curriculum requirements. On Monday, a holiday, the Belizean teachers from the Buena Vista Government School, Bullet Tree Falls and other schools showed up to show the U.S team their literacy activities.
What is special about the Belize Education Project is that some 31 students from the Eden High School in Santa Elena Town are being sponsored with their education. Also, teachers from Belize spend time in Colorado each year sharing their skills with U.S teachers.
Dr. Jean Kirshner continues to be amazed at the improvisation levels of our Belizean teachers, working with bottle caps, boxes and other items to enhance instructions. “We are always impressed, they inspire,” she says.
Among the members of the U.S team was a principal, who also worked along with the administrators from the various primary schools.
As the Belize Education Project continues to create ripples in cutting edge pedagogical support, there is no doubt that members of the team will be back to do more. “We are committed allies,” concludes Kirshner.
